Electro-Acuscope/Myopulse:
A Computerized Therapy For Horses
By SAMANTHA IMPERATO

As anyone in the horses industry knows, competing week after week can take its toll on the soundness of our equine athletes. In fact, a large amount of our time and money is spent pinpointing injuries and recognizing any associated complications. Fortunately, technology is constantly pressing forward, making it easier for us to deal with such dilemmas. The newest form of equine rehabilitation and prevention comes in a form of a computerized electronic instrument, which can aid in injury detection, as well as reduce treatment and recovery time.

The Acuscope/Myopulse system complements traditional veterinary procedures to ensure a quick recovery for the horse. Although the Electro-Acuscope and the Myopulse were originally developed for human physical therapy, they have had considerable success in horse rehabilitation in the last ten years. Common problems such as pulled muscles and ligaments, inflammation, abscesses, and defragmentive bone problems are treated in a much more rapid and effective manner with use of this system. The Acuscope has also proven to be effective in treating more severe conditions such as laminitis, navicular problems, and deep puncture wounds, and deteriorating coffin bone.

Acuscope/ Myopulse therapy is a modality applied primarily for pain relief and to speed the healing process. When damage or trauma occurs to living tissue the involved cells experience a disruption in their electrical capacity. This is accompanied by pain in the proximity of the injury and, many times, an inability for the body to heal itself.

The Acuscope/Myopulse provides auditory and numerical readouts that indicate the locations where the tissue is unhealthy. From that point, the Acuscope/Myopulse treats the tissue painlessly according to its specific needs and without the danger of over-treatment.

In recent, scientific studies, micro current stimulation has been proven to have a profoundly beneficial effect on living tissue due to its acceleration of cellular functions. The healing process is enhanced, and results are usually immediately noticeable with continued improvement over the next few days. Immediate reduction of pain and swelling or relief from muscle tightness is easily observed by the animals' relaxed behavior during treatment.

The Acuscope/Myoscope system is an important new tool to aid in the maintenance and rehabilitation of our equine athletes. The instrument gives us the opportunity to provide being utilized by veterinarians as well as a steadily increasing group of people who have been trained by qualified instructors to use this equipment on horses.
